In general, in the state of California, child support is payments that are made to a custodial parent by the non-custodial parent. The purpose of child support is to ensure that the child has the financial resources necessary to live a healthy and normal life. This includes things like food, shelter, clothing, and healthcare.
There are many factors that go into calculating how much child support should be paid. Some of these factors include:

- The number of children being supported
- The percentage of time each parent spends with the child

When Does Child Support Begin After Divorce?
In California, child support payments usually begin on the first day of the month following the month in which the divorce is finalized. This means that if your divorce is finalized in January, you will start making child support payments in February.
There are a few exceptions to this rule, however. If the non-custodial parent is ordered to pay back child support arrears (that is, past due payments), then child support payments will not begin until those late payments have been paid in full.
Additionally, if the custodial parent agrees to let the non-custodial parent skip one or more months of payments, child support payments may be delayed until the custodial parent agrees to start receiving them again.

What If I Need a Modification on My Child Support?
It is important to note that the child support amount that is initially ordered may not be the same amount that is paid forever. If there is a significant change in circumstances, either parent can request a modification of the child support order.

- A change in custody arrangements
- A change in the needs of the child (for example, if the child develops a medical condition that requires expensive treatment)
